An Emmy history
As stated previously, during Jen’s days on Friends she was one of the regulars at the Emmy Awards, as she and the show were often nominated. It has been noted by many that she often took her biggest fashion risks at the Emmys each year; indeed, to see Jen’s Emmy looks in succession is to watch something of an evolution both in her own style and in the prevailing trends of the past several years. Let’s look back at years of glamour and, in 2002, triumph!

1999 In 1999, Jen made a dramatic appearance, not only creating a stir with her choice of companion (then-boyfriend Brad Pitt), but shocking many with her funky gown and faux dreadlocks. The fashion police were divided on this look, but there is no doubt that Jen made a very definite statement on this early red-carpet outing.

2000 Celebrating her first nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, Jen also had her newly married status to revel in, as this was her first public appearance with Brad since her wedding. Opting for a sleeker look, she wore a simple red gown and a low ponytail; she later told People that this was one of her favorite red-carpet looks because she was comfortable all night.
2001 Jen was once again nominated for a supporting award, but did not attend. The festivities were postponed and greatly scaled back due to the recent September 11th attacks.

2002 Well, you can see how that night turned out! From the very start, she looked like a winner in her exquisite Christian Dior gown. Coming off of Rachel’s pregnancy storyline, Jen’s magical comic touch had been shown off to the full for the past season, and her win for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series was well-deserved. Her acceptance speech was touching, tearful, and heartfelt. Later that evening, she shared a moment of glory with the cast and crew, as the series celebrated its own win. This was, without a doubt, a memorable evening.

2003 The following year, again nominated for the lead actress prize, Jen was feeling decidedly more low-key. As she later told Vogue, she wasn’t feeling “gowny and fabulous”, so she opted for a vintage Halston dress and simple, straight hair (Chris corroborates Jen’s sentiment, telling Us Weekly that Jen “wanted to be comfortable” that night). Adding to the comfort factor was her choice of date; with Brad away filming Troy, Jen made it a girls’ night with her friend Andrea Bendewald.

2004 As I’ve previously discussed, this most recent Emmy appearance was her last one for Friends. At this point, she deftly balanced her past in television and her future in film, and her look somehow managed to be both glamorous and approachably bohemian. She ended her Friends run with style and class.
