He's Just Not That Into You

A new spin on He’s Just Not That Into You

Recently, while browsing YouTube, I came across something hilarious. Let’s just say . . . he’s really not that into you if he’s cursing you out! A very clever YouTuber spiked the He’s Just Not That Into You trailer with soundbites from Christian Bale’s infamous rant on the set of Terminator Salvation.

The results are hysterical, even if they’re not exactly family friendly. I knew that Ben Affleck’s character Neil was against marriage at first, but I didn’t know that he felt quite that strongly about it! And this really does go to show that nothing fazes Gigi - even a healthy dose of profanity. There’s more where that came from, too; the entire video is cleverly embellished with now-notorious phrases from the leaked audio recording. The video is below:

Is he into her?

Is this just a friendly dinner between costars, or something else entirely? On Thursday night, Jen was snapped leaving a restaurant in New York City - with none other than Bradley Cooper, one of her costars in He’s Just Not That Into You (pics are at PopSugar). Bradley, who stars in current box office hit The Hangover, was seen opening the door for Jen as the two of them entered a black SUV. And rumors have circulated about these two for a while - so what do we think? Are they friendly, or are they very friendly?

Meanwhile, Jen is in New York to film The Bounty (formerly titled Bounty Hunter). So far, her costar Gerard Butler has been seen on the set - here’s hoping we see Jen in action soon!

He’s Just Not That Into You is coming to DVD this Tuesday! On June 2nd, this charming ensemble comedy, in which Jen costars with an all-star cast (including Drew Barrymore, Ben Affleck, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Jennifer Connelly), will be available on DVD and Blu-ray. The DVD’s features are minimal - the only extras on this version of the movie are deleted scenes, with optional commentary from director Ken Kwapis. However, the Blu-ray edition has a lot more, including a digital copy, a “duet for telephones,” and an interactive newspaper, the Baltimore Blade, featuring the characters from the movie, according to the DVD Times.

Both editions, DVD and Blu-ray, are now available for pre-order on Amazon, and they will be available for purchase at most major retailers starting on Tuesday.

The top 5, according to Box Office Mojo:

The latter is also available on Blu-ray. It can now be pre-ordered on Amazon.

Jen has another #1 hit!

Congratulations to the cast and crew of He’s Just Not That Into You! The romantic comedy, in which Jen is part of a star-studded ensemble, topped the box office over the weekend with a three-day take of $27.8 million, according to Box Office Mojo. Following the success of Marley & Me just a month and a half ago, Jen is on a hot streak!

Of course, box-office success isn’t the only thing that Jen has to celebrate these days - you wouldn’t know it to look at her, but she is turning 40 tomorrow! With that, Jen had a party at her place on Saturday - E! Online reports that along with usual suspects like Sheryl, Courteney, and David, Jen celebrated the milestone with many celebrity pals, including Oprah, Chelsea Handler, Tom Hanks, and Rita Wilson. John Mayer celebrated with her, too - it is reported that Jen and John were very affectionate all night. Also, Fabric magazine reports that Jen’s parents, who divorced when she was 9, both showed up for their daughter’s celebration.

Back to John Mayer, I’d like to congratulate him on his two wins at Sunday’s Grammy Awards! He won Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for “Say” and Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance for “Gravity.” While Jen did not accompany him on the red carpet, she did celebrate with him later - Rolling Stone reports that Jen was in attendance at SonyBMG’s party at the Beverly Hills Hotel. These two have a lot to celebrate - check out the picture below of John posing with his awards.

A not-so-critical perspective on He’s Just Not That Into You

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

020209-13

Following hot on the heels of Marley & Me, Jen has another film in theaters now, He’s Just Not That Into You. Jen’s latest, as you all know by now, is an ensemble piece costarring Drew Barrymore, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Connelly, Ginnifer Goodwin, Scarlett Johansson, Justin Long, Bradley Cooper, and Kevin Connolly.

The stars play Baltimore residents navigating the various stages of relationships - some are mastering the meet-cute, some are wrestling with commitment, some with fidelity. And everyone’s connected - Gigi (Ginnifer Goodwin), who gets coaching on first impressions from Alex (Justin Long), works with Beth (Jennifer Aniston), whose boyfriend Neil (Ben Affleck) won’t propose after years of cohabitation. Gigi’s sister Janine (Jennifer Connelly) is married to Ben (Bradley Cooper), who’s having an affair with Anna (Scarlett Johansson), who’s stringing Conor (Kevin Connolly) along. And Anna’s pal Mary (Drew Barrymore) finds herself confused by the many technologies that have come into play in the dating game. I’m exhausted just thinking about it - not that this is a bad thing.

The many intertwined storylines make for an engaging film with something for everyone - every audience member is bound to look at at least one of the characters and relate. For me, that character was Gigi - I cringed slightly knowing that I have misread men in many of the same ways that she does. While many of her scenarios are comedic, the emotional weight of the film is carried by the two Jennifers. Jennifer Connelly, as Janine, is refreshingly raw as a wife who comes to realize that her husband has not been entirely honest with her. And Jennifer Aniston’s role as Beth, while brief, showcases her range brilliantly. Her strength has always been her warmth, but she does not rest on it - all of Beth’s emotions, even the difficult ones, feel completely genuine.

Every character’s “happily ever after” looks different - some are unexpected, and not every character even gets a happy ending. Nevertheless, I’d call this a feel-good movie - I know I left in a very giddy mood. As romantic comedies go, this one is very well done, even if it isn’t exactly a typical romantic comedy. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry . . . but you’ll laugh more.

John comments on the many gadgets in Jen’s new home, and Jen comments on, well, you’ll see! Celeb watchers might recall a rather, er, interesting outfit that John wore some time ago, and Ellen asks whether he’ll wear it to Jen’s 40th birthday bash. She sums it up, though, when she tells Ellen, “I think he’s funny!”

Jen talks directing and dating

Jen was on The Early Show yesterday, and while the interview was brief, it covered a lot of territory! Julie Chen led by asking Jen whether she’s had to be the one to say “he’s just not that into you” - Jen replied that she hasn’t, but friends have had to say, “Honey, I think he’s gay” about men in Jen’s past! The conversation then turned to directing, since Jen directed the short film Room 10. Julie asked Jen, “After you directed the short, did you bring something else to the project, because you were in the shoes of the director?” Jen’s reply is that she’s always a bit “bossy.” Finally, what makes a great date for Jen? A great restaurant, a great conversation, and a walk on the beach. The video is on CBS News.

Just a reminder - Jen’s on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno tonight! Also, there was a screening of HJNTIY in New York last night - Jen wasn’t there, but her costar Ginnifer was, as was Entertainment Tonight!

Isn’t she lovely? The red carpet premiere of He’s Just Not That Into You was tonight, and Jen looked sensational! Like the rest of the cast, she showed up solo, and she looked stylish in a fitted black suit, with her hair in a ponytail. Jen wasn’t the only one making a stunning statement on the red carpet tonight - Jen, Ginnifer Goodwin, Scarlett Johansson, Drew Barrymore, and Jennifer Connelly all looked sensational. More importantly, the camaraderie between the costars was more than evident - Jen and Scarlett seemed to really hit it off! Justin Long on Ellen

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

Jen’s He’s Just Not That Into You costar Justin Long recently taped an interview for Monday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show - and Ellen did not shy away from the tough questions!

Justin, who also appeared alongside Jen in The Break-Up, recently had a breakup of his own with HJNTIY costar Drew Barrymore, but when asked about doing press with an ex, he told the talk show host (and Jen pal) that until she asked, it had not been awkward at all, according to People. He even goes so far as to say that he and Drew are still friends, telling Ellen, “She has this amazing ability to make anyone feel like at ease.”

The full interview will air on Monday - check local listings for air time in your area.

An interview with Jen and Drew

As Jen continues to promote He’s Just Not That Into You, she’s doing interviews alongside her costars, as we’ve previously seen. They keep on coming, too - here’s a particularly good one where Jen and Drew talk to American Superstar TV. Some highlights of the interview, along with the video, can be seen below.

Drew on what attracted her to this movie: “I was so excited to approach a subject matter that was trying to guide people in the right direction, because I was saying earlier, I want really good, honest advice from my friends, not like the coddling advice.”

Drew on Justin’s character: Justin’s character is like the gospel, he’s the truth, it’s so great. We all need someone like that, just lay it on.”

Jen on her first crush: “I do remember, I don’t remember his name, I don’t remember anything except him, but that’s it. He was friends with, his parents were friends with my parents in California, and I was six and I had a big crush on him, can’t remember his name . . . I was like five, I handled it poorly.”

Jen on social networking: “It’s happening speedy. I mean, there’s nothing, I feel like my poor grandmother did with the answering machine. She didn’t understand. She would just talk, thinking that there was somebody there, and leave five-minute messages. So it’s sort of like, I feel like, the Dark Ages.”

Jen on Ben: “I had such a ball, he was so lovely and so funny and so charming! I loved every minute of working with him. And it was, sort of like sometimes you get an actor lucky enough that you get that easy volley with and we just, we had a great time.”

More HJNTIY interviews!

Promotion for He’s Just Not That Into You is in full swing, and with that, the stars gave interviews this weekend. Jen, Drew, Ginnifer, and Scarlett talked to interviewers about that crazy little thing called love.

First up is Extra, where the ladies were asked an assortment of questions about love. When asked whether dating as a celebrity is hard, Jen replied that dating itself is hard! Drew reveals that she does enjoy dates, though, and Jen offers to take her out! Extra viewers also videotaped their own questions for the superstar love experts. If you buy a guy a gift and he doesn’t return the favor, is he into you? The answer to that would be a resounding no. The full video is here.

Next up was Access Hollywood, where bowls of dirty conversation hearts were a major conversation piece. After having a laugh over the naughty expressions on the candy, the ladies got to talking about turn-ons and turn-offs. Jen revealed her “baboon instinct” when it comes to men’s grooming - however, she did say that ultimately, it all comes down to chemistry. The video is here.

The men of HJNTIY got in on the act, as well; The Insider and Entertainment Tonight interviewed Ben, Justin, Bradley, and Kevin for a male perspective on the flick. Meanwhile, what else was Jen doing this weekend? She was saving the day! According to Britain’s Daily Mail (photos at the link), Jen spotted a dog out and about, and Jen took action with the help of a paparazzo on the scene, safely returning the pooch home. Talk about a happy ending!

The ladies of HJNTIY on The Insider

And so it begins! The cast of He’s Just Not That Into You is out and about promoting the movie, and one of their stops was with The Insider’s Samantha Harris. Jennifer, Ginnifer, Scarlett, and Drew sat down with Samantha to talk about romantic gestures and crushes; Jen reveals that her childhood crush was Shaun Cassidy! Here are some other highlights of the interview - watch the video here:

Samantha: How do you know when a guy’s just not that into you?
Jen: How do you know? I think it’s pretty clear! I think you just know.
Scarlett: It’s very obvious to me that if somebody’s not putting in that same effort that you are, it’s just not happening, you know what I mean?
Jen: Yeah, I figure just pay attention to the actions. You know, words are one thing, but I think if they keep pulling your pigtail, they might like you.

Ginnifer: Everyone’s ‘happily ever afters’ are going to be distinctly different.

Scarlett: People are going to have different ways of expressing it, but I think it’s always nice for someone to travel to see you, that’s always a nice thing.

Ginnifer: The most romantic thing I’ve done? My biggest attempt at being romantic was when I was much younger. I did kidnap a boyfriend. I hid his passport and I put him on a train and we went to Canada.
Jen: I took a boyfriend to a hotel for his birthday and brought a massage table and I gave him a massage.
Samantha: Is your technique good?
Jen: My technique is fantastic.

Costar Justin Long

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

justin-long-012808

If Jen’s He’s Just Not That Into You costar Justin Long looks familiar, that’s because he is - this isn’t the first time he’s shared the screen with her. Jen fans might remember him as gallery receptionist Christopher in The Break-Up. A native of Fairfield, Connecticut, the Vassar grad got his start on NBC’s Ed, alongside future HJNTIY costar Ginnifer Goodwin; Justin was a series regular, playing nerdy high schooler Warren Cheswick. He carried that geeky persona into a supporting role in Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, and he played boyfriend roles in Crossroads and Herbie: Fully Loaded. He has also appeared in independent films such as Waiting . . . and its upcoming sequel Still Waiting . . ., and of course, his quirky role in The Break-Up was something of a stretch as well. More recently, he appeared with Bruce Willis in Live Free or Die Hard. As “advice guy” Alex in HJNTIY, he is set to show a more adult, confident side of his acting abilities.

So what’s next for Justin? In addition to his duties as the “Mac guy” in a series of advertisements for Macintosh, he has a slew of upcoming releases hitting theaters this year. The roles include Todd in Serious Moonlight, directed by Cheryl Hines and written by the late Adrienne Shelly, Chase Revere in Patriotville, in which he plays a small-town man looking to protect a piece of history, and Paul Saunders in Youth In Revolt, directed by The Good Girl director Miguel Arteta and based on the novel by C.D. Payne. With his diverse resume, the future looks bright for this talented actor.
