One of Jen’s more unconventional projects was a voice role in the 1999 animated feature The Iron Giant. Set in the 1950’s, the film centers around a young boy named Hogarth and his friendship with a mysterious giant robot. While Hogarth warmly accepts his new friend, other residents of his small town are less than welcoming, especially governing officials, who seek to destroy the machine (McCarthyism is a chief theme). Jen voices the role of Annie, Hogarth’s hardworking, strong, and impossibly patient mother.
Speaking of parenting, this is an excellent flick pick for the children in your life. Younger children, older children, and even adults can find something to enjoy about this charming film, as it operates on many levels with its story and historical context. This is a wonderful launching point for discussion of social skills, prejudice, and American history. The Iron Giant, along with other enriching activities (an assortment of options can be found throughout Parenting Our Children), can be a godsend for those antsy rainy days.
