Friends: Season 6
In Season 6, it seems that our Friends played Musical Apartments, with all of the changes in living arrangements that took place. Monica and Chandler took the next step in their relationship and decided to cohabitate, leaving Rachel to find a new place to live, and Joey to find a new roommate. Assorted permutations followed, few lasting more than a few episodes. The entire season had an air of impermanence, although that may be a projection of the dedicated follower’s knowledge that at this point, negotiations for any further seasons would not be complete until the eleventh hour. All’s well that ends well, however, as the season ends with Monica and Chandler’s engagement! Here, once again, are some highlights of Season 6:
The One Where Ross Got High Once again, we join our Friends for Thanksgiving, along with Ross and Monica’s parents, who are not exactly fond of Chandler. As it turns out, their grudge is due to the scapegoating efforts of a young and very stoned Ross. Chandler’s attempts to clear his name lead to an assortment of revelations, including the fact that Rachel’s attempt at making a trifle was hugely unsuccessful (contrary to the fakery of all assembled), and Phoebe’s rather unusual dreams about Jacques Cousteau.
The One With Rachel’s Sister Reese Witherspoon guest-stars as Rachel’s youngest sister Jill, who, with the purchase of a boat, has pushed the limits of their father’s indulgence just a bit too far. She comes to Rachel hoping to learn how to be independent, and in seeing Jill, Rachel realizes just how far she’s come. Meanwhile, Monica refuses to admit that she’s sick, and Joey’s newfound pickup tactic begins to backfire.
The One Where Paul’s the Man Ross is dating his student Elizabeth, and her father Paul (Bruce Willis) is none too pleased. Of course, he is now dating Rachel, and as both he and Elizabeth have decided that their vacation home is the perfect place to take their respective partners, an elaborate attempt to hide Ross ensues. Paul’s rather goofy pregame routine comes back to haunt him when Ross is eventually discovered, in Paul’s bedroom of all places! This episode decidedly takes the concept of situation comedy to the next level in its treatment of the many relationships at play.
The One With The Proposal The title says it all: a proposal happens in this episode. However, there needs to be a complication, and it comes in the form of Richard, who happens to be at the restaurant on the night on which Chandler intended to propose to Monica. His attempt to set up another proposal attempt backfires royally, but yes, that proposal does happen, in a scene that is among the most touching and memorable in the series.
